Missing Animal Information

If your pet has gone missing, check our Lost and Found Animals page to see if we have picked them up. If we don’t have them, please report it to us within 48 hours by filling out the Lost Animals Form or by calling us on 1300 459 689. This will help us to identify your pet if we pick up any lost or stray animals roaming in a public area.

How long we hold animals

Lost and stray animals picked up by our Rangers are transported to our Animal Care Facility in Cootamundra or our Animal Hold Facility in Gundagai. Animals held at the Animal Hold Facility are kept overnight and transferred to the Animal Care Facility the following day.

If the animal is microchipped, it is kept at the Animal Care Facility for 14 days.  If the animal is not microchipped and nobody has come forward to claim ownership, then the animal can only be kept for 7 days. After these periods, pets are owned by Council and put up for adoption. Animals currently impounded and available for adoption can be viewed on our Lost and Found Animals page.

Council is dedicated to reducing the number of animals being euthanised throughout our Council area. We have volunteers devoted to rehoming pets that have been rescued.

Fees payable to claim my pet

If your pet is impounded, you will need to pay the appropriate release fees before you can take your animal home. EFTPOS facilities are available at the Cootamundra and Gundagai Council Offices.

Animals can be released between the hours of 9.00am – 4.00pm Monday to Friday (Public Holidays excluded) by contacting us on 1300 459 689.

When you find a stray or lost animal

If you find a lost dog or a cat wearing a collar or a tag with identification, please contact its owner as your first course of action.

If you are unable to contact the owner, please contact us on 1300 459 689 within 24 hours and one of our Rangers will take it to the applicable animal facility.
