Combating Illegal Dumping

The Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) Regulatory Services are applying for grant funding under the NSW Government’s Combating Illegal Dumping Clean-up and Prevention program. If successful, the grant funds will assist Council with the ongoing costs relating to combating illegal dumping of rubbish in our Local Government Area. The grant program is funded under the Waste Less Recycle More initiative, administered by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry an Environment.” The grants can be used by councils, public land managers and community groups to implement prevention and clean-up action on publicly managed land or to establish illegal dumping baseline data.

Last financial year the Council attended to over 40 cases of illegal dumping in various locations around the LGA. These cases included the dumping of household furniture, domestic waste e.g. food, nappies, clothes, electronic waste like TV’s, white goods including fridges and dishwashers, mattresses, dead animals and several incidents of construction and demolition waste that have been left on the roadside or in a reserve.

CGRC mayor Cr Abb McAlister said, illegal dumping is a significant issue in our LGA, and this behaviour is unacceptable within our communities.

“It has detrimental effects on the health and environment of our towns and our villages. It also costs the Council considerably to provide resources and prevention measures as well as managing the clean-up of these unsightly events. I urge all residents to be on the look out for episodes of illegal dumping of rubbish and report it to Council or through the EPA channels available,” Cr McAlister said.

Along with increased surveillance and patrolling across the LGA, Council will be asking the NSW Government for grant funding to purchase covert cameras that will be set up around the LGA to capture any dumping activities, along with the installation of signage to encourage people to report littering by using the EPA’s RID online site or the “Don’t be a Tosser” or “Snap Send Solve” apps.

Residents can report illegal dumping by:

  • Contacting CGRC on 1300 459 689 or mail@cgrc.nsw.gov.au
  • Visiting RID Online
  • Calling the NSW EPA RID helpline on 131 555 or visit ridonline.epa.nsw.gov.au
  • Reporting through Snap Send Solve Free App.
